Phillips Idowu is the GB Number 1 Triple Athlete.

On 29th July 2010 Phillips Idowu won a European Gold Medal for Triple Jump, with a new Personal Best jump of 17.81 metres. He beat Teddy Tamgho, his young rival from France. Teddy is 10 years younger than Phillips Idowu.

GNAS archery stands for Grand National Archery Society.

There are regular GNAS archery events throughout the year.

Former National Football League Players were tested for the effects of supplementation after 12 months of being on supplements. The research was carried out by The Fisher Institute of Medical Research.

The players were aged 33 to 76, with an average age of 50.1 years. Three quarters of the players were Anglo-American, one quarter were African-American.
The players had played football for on average 19 years, including school, college and professional football.

The players had had up to 40 injuries from playing football (average 3 injuries). 59% had had surgeries for their injuries, and 47% had a permanent injury.
Their quality of life had been affected by increased problems with arthritis, range of movement, joint pain and stiffness.

After taking the supplements the players reported improvement in arthritis, joint pain, range of movement and stiffness, especially in their arms, legs, ankles, knees, fingers, hands, elbows, shoulders, neck and back. The Cambridge and Oxford Boat Race is on 3rd April 2010 at 16.30pm BST.
The University Boat Race tradition goes back to 1829, when 2 school friends (one of whom went to Cambridge University, and the other to Oxford University) challenged each other to a boat race.

The course of the Cambridge and Oxford Boat Race has remained the same.
It is along a tidal section of the River Thames, starting above Putney Road Bridge, and finishing 4 miles and 374 yards downstream from the Chiswick Road Bridge.
The record for the fastest row is held by Cambridge. In 1998 they completed the course of the Cambridge and Oxford Boat Race in 16 mins 19 seconds.
In the University Boat Race series, Cambridge leads by 79-75.

Years ago my father was one of the Cambridge rowers, and later Coach of the Cambridge rowing team.
In fact it was his love of rowing that secured him a place as a student at Cambridge.
As a young man he had had many interviews trying to get in to a Cambridge College, without success.
It was only when he commented about the sound of rowers rowing passed the room where he was being interviewed, that the interviewers suddenly looked at him in a new light!

All the rowers in the Cambridge and Oxford Boat race are students at the Universities, doing normal academic studies, as well as rowing.
They train throughout the year building up their strength , endurance and fitness.

Sport supplement or juicer?

Athletes subject their bodies to much more wear and tear, and so need more antioxidant protection (and more fruits and vegetables).
So what to do?

There are two options.

One is to get a juicer and make juice from your fruits and vegetables. There are many juicers on the market. Some are Mickey Mouse affairs, others great big monsters. You want one with enough grunt to be able to give your carrots etc a good hard squeeze to get all the juice out.

You may want to consider at some point juicing wheatgrass. You can either grow it yourself, or buy it from a quality health shop. It is something of an acquired taste, but extremely nutritious and beneficial. Not all juicers are able to handle it.

The juicer I recommend and use myself is the

It is a bit weighty so it lives on my kitchen counter which means that I don’t have to keep lifting it in and out of cupboards.

Be aware that washing the fruits and vegetables, juicing them and cleaning the juicer takes time. If you are highly organised, and have time to spare this is an excellent solution to getting extra nutrients for the athlete to improve their health and performance.

Alternatively there is a super duper blender the
Vita-Mix 5200. It has the advantage of blending all the skin, seeds, and pulp giving you all the fiber and roughage. You get nutrients from the whole of the fruits and vegetables. The flip side to this is that you have to digest more, and that may conflict with your training schedule.

For those of that live in the real world, and who may not have the time or organisation to be able to do this every day, then a sport supplement must be considered. Sports supplements come in many shapes and forms. I recommend you look for a range of supplements designed to work together, and designed to give your body the correct levels of nutrients for optimal health and performance. Not too much, and not too little.

Why fruits and vegetables?

Fruits and vegetables provide the minerals, vitamins and fibre to fight and prevent diseases, and to repair the body from wear and tear.

A 1998 study in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition found that we need to eat 2 – 4 servings of fruit, and 3 – 5 servings of vegetables daily for minimal antioxidant protection. That’s 5 – 9 portions of fruit and vegetables every day.

Athletes subject their bodies to much more wear and tear, and so need more antioxidant protection (and more fruits and vegetables).

A 2001 report by the National Academy of Science says that we are getting about 50% less antioxidant from our food than they had previously estimated. Their solution was that we should eat twice as much fruit and vegetables.

The UK National Diet and Nutrition Survey shows that the average fruit and vegetable consumption among adults aged 19 to 64 years in UK is less than 3 portions a day. Only 13% of men and 15% of women consume five or more portions of fruit and vegetables a day. Young men averaged 1.3 portions per day compared with 3.6 portions by the oldest group of men.

So young male athletes could be eating as little as 1.3 portions of fruits and vegetables when their bodies need 10 – 18 portions for optimal health and performance.

Is it reasonable to expect people to increase their intake to 10 – 18 portions? Could you eat 10 – 18 portions? And train and compete with all that food inside you?

The only way to absorb these extra nutrients and continue with training and competition is to take a sport supplement.

I’ll talk at more length about sports supplements in a later post.

Why food just isn't enough.

Many people think they eat well and have no need of a sport supplement.
What they often mean is that some days they eat well,
and many days they get stressed and grab the nearest thing.

The Journal of American Clinical Nutrition says that 99% of Americans are not getting sufficient daily nutrition from all five food groups. This despite the abundance of food in the USA.

It is challenging to be sure you get the right balance of all the essential nutrients every day. For a start what are all the essential nutrients? And which foods contain them? This information is not readily available.

One solution is to take a quality sports supplement which supplies the correct levels of nutrients.

Athletes have particularly needs because they subject their bodies to extremes of exercise. This leads to injuries which the body has to repair. The stress of training and competition compromises their immune systems leading to minor illnesses such as upper respiratory tract infections. These in turn reduce the amount of training an athlete can do, reducing their performance.

To perform at your best, consider taking quality sport supplements. A good sport supplement will have a system - a combination of different products, each designed to support a particular aspect of the body’s defences.

Throughout history it has been known that elite hunters/athletes etc needed the best nutrition to have the energy to catch prey, or defend the cave.

For millennia humans were cavemen and hunter gatherers.

That is what our bodies were evolved for over thousands of years. In the last hundred years or so, there have been major changes to our life styles. However evolution moves at a slower pace and there has been little change to our bodies (in a genetic or physiological sense).

How does our modern day diet compare with the primitive diet?

Why would you consider a sport supplement?

Let’s take a look at what our ancient ancestors ate, and what nutrition they received from their food.

Our ancestors had a limited ability to cook. Cooking greatly reduces the nutritional value of most food. For example, research by Souci SW et al in Food Composition and Nutrition Tables, Boca Raton, Fl, CRC Press 2000 shows that carrots when cooked lose most of their vitamin C, vitamin A, tocopherols, and vitamin E. Our ancestors raw carrots had much more nutritive value than our cooked ones.

They mostly ate food that was in season, and much of it would have been raw. They ate a much wider range of foods than us, especially fruits, vegetables, sea weeds, seeds, saps and fungi.

Research by Eaton et al in European Journal of Clinical Nutrition 1997, shows that primitive man’s food intake included much higher levels of iron, fibre, vitamin C, vitamin E, riboflavin, zinc, thiamine, calcium, carotene, vitamin A and folate than our modern diet.

The key points of difference are

1) Primitive diet was mostly raw, with all nutrients intact.

2) Only 1% grain, compared to 59% grain/grain products today.

3) Sugar was rare.

4) Dairy produce and fats were rare.

Our bodies were designed for a wide diversity of nutrient rich food.

Instead most people today eat large amounts of cereals, sugar, dairy/fat and cooked/processed foods with little nutritive value.

For optimum sports performance athlete (and ordinary people) need to make up this deficit of nutrients. This can be done with a good sport supplement.

Human bodies are a miracle.
They are designed to repair, restore, protect and defend themselves.
If you cut your hand your skin will naturally heal itself.
To do this your body needs to have the tools that it was intended to have.

The problem is that we no longer live in the world for which our bodies were designed. Now we need to compensate for the changes to our world, and supplements and sport supplements can be part of that compensation.

We were designed for a world that was pristine and pure.
Today we face:
- psychological stresses at work, on the road and in the fractured family.

- physical stress from either too little, or too much, exercise.
The obesity epidemic is partially due to lack of exercise, while athletes get wear and tear on their joints.

- Environmental stress with toxins in the water, the air and the home
Studies of drinking water in every one of100 cities tested showed drugs in the drinking water. Your home, your office, stores, bars, restaurants contain chemicals such as pesticides, formaldehyde, toxic metals such as lead and cadmium. These come from carpets, cleaning materials, photocopiers, dry cleaning etc

- dietary stress from processed foods, food grown on impoverished soils.
Even if you buy the best food available today, it has much less nutritional value than the same food grown 50 years ago. Studies show that food today has significantly less vitamins, calcium, magnesium, copper, sodium, potassium and fibre than food grown in the 1950s or 1930s.

Our bodies are designed to heal themselves. Today we face more challenges than ever before. For optimal health and performance we need the right nutrients, but it is no longer possible to get enough from the food we eat.

For optimum performance we need to ensure that we have the right balance of nutrients each day. The only way this can be done is through taking a sport supplement.

I've been involved in sport all my life, so this is to share my experiences and passion for sport and sport supplements. I plan to review why you may want to take supplements for sport, and what to look for in a supplement. Whether you are interested in sport at elite level, as a weekend warrior or as a spectator, I hope you will find something to interest you.

My father came to the UK looking for a place at University.
He went to Cambridge. He had many interviews, but no luck.
One day he walked into an office for another interview. He heard the sound of rowers outside the window. As a keen sportsman he commented about the rowing, and the tone of the interview immediately changed. Good rowers were of great interest to the College.

He went on to row for Cambridge, and became the Cambridge rowing coach. He wanted a career in sport, but in those days that wasn’t possible, so he became a doctor.

As a small child I learned about sport, stamina, endurance and the scientific/medical background to sports.

As a sportswoman, my passions are horse riding, sailing, running and walking my dogs - and yes I still enjoy rowing. As a student at Cardiff University I was awarded a Blue for both sailing and riding.

So sport has been a major feature of my life.

Where do the sports supplements come in?
Some years ago I had a major illness. I tried the orthodox medical route without success. Eventually I studied the latest developments – particularly the most recent Nobel prizes for medicine, and supplements. As a doctor’s daughter I was extremely sceptical.
